2. What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is an injury to the neck and/or supporting structures that
occurs when the head and neck are violently thrust backward, forward,
or side to side. Cervical acceleration deceleration (CAD) is the
appropriate terminology used to describe the mechanism of injury.
Whiplash can occur either with low speed or high speed impact
collisions. Too often people don’t seek chiropractic care until more
serious complications develop. So Don’t Wait Any Longer, Call the auto accident chiropractor at ProChiropractic today!
3. How long does it take to heal from whiplash?
That depends
on the degree and type of injury one has sustained. It also depends on
your state of health, since people with chronic health difficulties on
average heal slower.
That being said, the healing of whiplash injuries occurs through three phases. These phases can require up to one year to complete, and sometimes longer. Since whiplash injury is primarily damage to the soft tissues: muscles, ligaments, tendons and discs; healing occurs through the formation of scar tissue and not by regeneration of the original damaged tissue.
1st Phase: Inflammatory Phase
In this phase there is progressive bleeding from the stretching and
tearing of the injured soft tissues supporting the spine. As a result,
there is often a subsequent increase in pain and swelling for
approximately the first 72 hours.
2nd Phase: Repair and Regeneration Phase
In this phase the
body attempts to mend the areas of injury by literally filling in the
areas of damage with scar tissue. This phase takes approximately six to
eight weeks for completion.
3rd Phase: Remodeling Phase
The remodeling phase is
characterized by the body’s attempt to reorganize the disorganized scar
tissue that has formed. In other words, it is a period in which the
body tries to make the scar tissue come as close in quality to the
original tissue as possible. This important phase takes up to 12 months
or longer to complete.
4. What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health science
that understands the relationship between structure, primarily the
spine, and function, primarily the nervous system, of the human body
and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of
health. Chiropractic is a drugless health care method with the goal of
relieving pain and putting your body in proper alignment to bring the
body to its ultimate health.
